Household Skills

Many schools offer classes in "Home Economics", which is basically cooking. This is not what I mean by household skills. I define household skills as: "The basic knowledge of how to run and maintain a residence." Whether you live in a house, condo, apartment or you are renting or buying, there are some simple things you should know that could save you money and add to your living experience.

  • Minor electrical repair (circuit breaker use and location)
  • How to paint walls (tools and prep necessary)
  • Basic home maintenance (patching holes in walls, etc.)
  • Basics of home improvement (simple landscaping, furniture assembly, etc.)
  • The proper uses and functions of major household appliances.

Going into great detail on any of these subjects is not necessary. For example, you don't need to know the difference between AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) to change a broken light switch. But you need to know where the circuit breaker is located, and how to turn off the power to the switch before you attempt to change it. It is actually a very simple task that everyone should know how to do, yet many people are never shown.

The same idea applies to patching nail holes in a wall or repainting a room. You don't need to know how to mix plaster or paint, just how to apply it and get the best results. There is no need to hire a landscape architect to plant trees or shrubs in your yard or to lay down cement stepping stones.

Just some basic knowledge of what to expect, once you move into your own place and you are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep. Sure, you can always hire someone to do simple things around the house, but it is so much more rewarding to do it yourself, if it's not that difficult or complicated.

    THINK ABOUT IT!
