Another law that limits an individuals freedom
of choice is the helmet law. All motorcycle (and in some cases
bicycle) riders are required to wear a helmet. This law was
created on the theory that motorcycle accidents are usually
devastating, and that motorcycle riders just don't care and
are willing to take more risk.
The theory is that motorcycle accidents, more often than
automobile accidents, result in injuries that are more severe.
Head injuries are much more common in motorcycle accidents
for obvious reasons. This, coupled with the fact that traumatic
injuries are more expensive to care for, led to the conclusion
that motorcycle accident injuries should be eliminate. But
since that is impossible, it was decided that everyone riding
on a motorcycle is required to wear a helmet.
This is simply a law that generates revenue. It should be
left up to the individual whether or not to wear a motorcycle helmet. The risk is totally
self-imposed.
